Many of you often ask about assessment, so I’ve tried to summerize things for you here.

(For your own grades individual assessment rubrics, use your grade ‘Catergories’)

Physical Education has 4 Criteria which have to be assessed, each one marked out of /?:

Criterion A – Use of knowledge / 8

Criterion B – Movement Composition / 6

Criterion C – Performance / 10

Criterion D – Social Skills and personal engagement / 8

So what do each of these criteria actually mean? This is how the IBO describe each criterion.

Use of knowledge

Students are expected to have a knowledge and understanding of the physical activities or topics studied. They are also expected to be able to use this knowledge and understanding critically, and apply it to analyse situations and solve problems.

MOVEMENT COMPOSITION:

Students are expected to be able to compose sequences of aesthetic movement, through exploring movement possibilities and variations in accordance with the principles and concepts of a particular aesthetic activity and using this as inspiration.

PERFORMANCE:

Students are expected to be able to perform in a range of activities, and show skills and techniques ranging from basic to complex. They should be able to apply tactics, strategies and rules in both individual and group situations.

SOCIAL SKILLS & PERSONAL ENGAGEMENT:

Students are expected to be able to communicate with others in a manner that enhances the working environment. This includes showing respect, support and encouragement, as well as demonstrating positive attitudes and strategies to improve relationships.

Within each activity that you do, you will be assessed by at least two criteria. During the activity, take time to look at the rubric for that activity and try to see how you will be assessed for that particular activity. You will not be required to do all of the things in these descriptions every time that you are being assessed in that criterion. For example, Criterion C, your work may just be focused upon tactical play or rules of an activity. This should help you to develop and build upon your understanding of individual activities, before looking to bring all of the aspects of the activity together.

For each reporting session, your overall grade is determined by the total of the scores from each criteria, giving an overall grade out of 7.
